The Memory Anthology is now available in print. Here are 2/10 pages from my illustrated story “Silent Song” (parental advisory). This is my friend David, the writer. He has Asperger’s syndrome and is looking for love. I’ve been filming a feature documentary about him for the past two years. Today our teaser was on Boing Boing and it was very encouraging.
Just made this short documentary with Boing Boing podcast producers/comic book artists – Ed Piskor, Jasen Lex, and Jim Rugg. In the video, we visit a singular archive containing the world’s largest collection of cartoon and comic book art: The Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum in Columbus, OH. Curator Caitlin McGurk was nice enough to give us the deluxe white-gloved tour. Photographer Ohad Cadji asked me to go about my day under the subtle scrutiny of his lens. I made sure to stay productive, but also, take a break and visit my favorite family-owned neighborhood grocery store, Donatelli’s. It’s been in the Bloomfield “Little Italy” neighborhood of Pittsburgh since 1932 and maybe it’s the artichoke and spinach hummus they carry, but I like that place’s energy. “Everything Will Probably Be Fine” is a documentary short I directed about my friend, Jenn Gooch. She’s an NPR and USA Today-recognized musician and conceptual artist, who recently struggled with medical bankruptcy. In the video, she points out how single-payer would particularly help artists and creative entrepreneurs, especially ones who want to start their own businesses. Also, check out “A Silent Spring Moment for Health Care“, a brief article on Michael Moore’s site relating Jenn’s story to the big picture of American health care.
There’s a neat little film event in Pittsburgh, PA called the Progressive Visions Short Video Contest. It focuses mostly on films with a political/social message, but will include films that interpret progressive rather broadly. It’s free and easy to enter, there are two $300 cash prizes, and a screening/awards show. Did I mention, I’m on the judges panel? Here are the guidelines.
Got an education in hip hop today from Ed Piskor – the comic book artist behind Hip Hop Family Tree. Ed’s book lays out a comprehensive history of hip hop and its key players, tracing the founding father DJs in the Bronx to the first appearance of rappers on TV and beyond. Check out Volume 1 from Fantagraphics and stay tuned for a low-riding tour through Ed’s art, mind, and neighborhood, in the forthcoming documentary.
I like to draw, but I spend much more of my time filming people who draw exceptionally well. So it was a pleasant surprise to be asked to contribute to Memory. Through Illustrator-generated line drawings and poetic prose, I created a 10-page story dealing with the topic of generalized anxiety. The anthology features comics and illustrations prompted by the concept “memory” by over 40 artists from 8 countries. The anthology also dons a cover by artist, Jim Rugg.
